Legal Advice for Non-Governmental Microfinance Institutions

Microfinance is relatively unknown in Thailand. To make matters worse, laws on the subject are vague. Most law firms in Thailand focus on corporate and business law. Very few have taken a look at foundation, co-operative, associations or Social Enterprise laws. This makes it very challenging for non-company microfinance organizations to get good legal advice. Other than the "Institutional Options" sheet found on the resource page of this website, most legal experts can provide little advice on specific topics relevant to the microfinance industry.

While there are likely other law firms inside Thailand who may have a working knowledge of microfinance, we would like to recommend a lawyer who is used by most of the major non-government microfinance programs. He is based in Ubon Ratchathani and has knowledge of microfinance within a company, foundation or association structure. He is an excellent resource for anyone wanting sound legal advice on their microfinance project. For more information, contact Khun Nitgon at 081-8782764.
